North Finchley Removals Health and Safety Policy

North Finchley Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with moving, handling, transportation and storage of household and commercial goods.

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and avoidable disruption by maintaining high standards of safety throughout every stage of our removal operations.

Management Commitment and Responsibilities

The management of North Finchley Removals accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance within the company. We will provide clear leadership, allocate appropriate resources and ensure that health and safety considerations are integral to planning and decision making.

Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy within their areas of control, including undertaking risk assessments, enforcing safe systems of work, monitoring standards on site and ensuring that staff have the necessary training and equipment to work safely.

All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Every member of staff is expected to follow company procedures, use equipment correctly, report hazards and cooperate fully in achieving our health and safety objectives.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We will identify and assess the risks arising from our removal activities, including surveying properties, packing, loading, unloading, transporting and setting up at destination addresses. Risk assessments will take into account factors such as manual handling, working in confined or elevated spaces, traffic routes, access limitations, client premises rules and any specific vulnerabilities present at each location.

Based on these assessments, safe systems of work will be developed, communicated and regularly reviewed. These may include agreed access routes, designated loading areas, the use of handling aids, team lifting requirements, vehicle securing procedures and special precautions for fragile, heavy or awkward items.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core part of removals work, and we recognise the particular risks associated with lifting, carrying and moving furniture, appliances, boxes and other items. We will minimise manual handling risks by planning moves carefully, using mechanical aids where reasonably practicable and ensuring that loads are within safe limits for the staff involved.

All staff required to handle loads will receive training in safe lifting techniques, posture, load assessment and teamwork. Trolleys, dollies, straps, ramps and other handling aids will be maintained in good condition and used in accordance with training and instructions.

Only trained and authorised employees may operate vehicles or specialist equipment. Pre use checks will be carried out on vehicles, ramps and associated equipment to ensure they are safe and suitable for the tasks expected.

Vehicles and Road Safety

North Finchley Removals is committed to safe driving and the responsible operation of all company vehicles. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, adhere to road traffic laws, follow company driving rules and maintain high standards of courtesy and awareness on the road.

Vehicles will be regularly inspected and serviced. Loads will be distributed and secured correctly to avoid shifting during transit. Routes will be planned to minimise risk, considering access constraints, traffic conditions and any time restrictions at client premises.

Client Premises and Public Safety

During removal work at homes, offices and other premises, our teams will take reasonable steps to protect clients, visitors and the general public from harm. This includes keeping access ways clear where possible, using warning signs or verbal warnings where necessary and avoiding creating unnecessary obstructions or trip hazards.

Protective coverings such as floor and corner protectors may be used where appropriate to reduce the risk of damage and to maintain safe footing. Particular care will be taken in communal areas, shared entrances and near public footpaths or parking areas.

Information, Instruction and Training

We believe that competent, well informed staff are essential to safe removals. All employees will receive suitable induction training on company health and safety procedures, emergency arrangements, incident reporting and specific hazards associated with removal work.

Ongoing training will cover topics such as manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle safety, working at height when necessary, hazard awareness and communication with clients. Refresher training will be provided where required, and additional instruction will be given when new equipment, processes or risks are introduced.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, suitable personal protective equipment will be provided, such as safety footwear, gloves and high visibility garments. Employees are required to use this equipment as instructed and to take care of it. Any defects or loss of equipment must be reported promptly so that replacements can be arranged.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, near misses, incidents and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as reasonably practicable. We will record and investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Emergency procedures will be in place for fire, injury, vehicle breakdowns and other foreseeable events. Staff will be briefed on how to respond, including raising the alarm, contacting the appropriate services, assisting clients where safe to do so and securing the scene to prevent further harm.

Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work

North Finchley Removals recognises the physically demanding nature of removal work and is committed to promoting employee wellbeing. We expect staff to present for work fit for duty and not under the influence of alcohol, illegal substances or misused medication.

Where employees have health conditions that may affect their ability to perform tasks safely, they are encouraged to inform management so that appropriate adjustments or alternative duties can be considered.

Consultation and Continuous Improvement

We encourage open communication and consultation on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to share concerns, suggestions and feedback on how our practices can be improved. Regular reviews of this policy and our procedures will be undertaken to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, operational experience and the nature of the services we provide.

This Health and Safety Policy represents our ongoing commitment to safe working and responsible conduct across all removal and relocation activities carried out by North Finchley Removals.
